We haven’t made flipping paper plates in a while! And yet, they are SO CUTE and SO easy…a cute Easter craft for preschoolers. If you like our Rocking Paper Plate Lamb, you’ll love it today Chick and Egg Craft Rocking Paper Plate. Low mess, great for fine motor skills and super cute!

We love crafting paper plates – a great eco-friendly material that’s super versatile. These little rocking hatching chicks are so cute and fascinating to play with!
They make a great drawing, coloring and cutting activity. If you are working with young children you can help by drawing the outline and the children can color in. Then try cutting together. Practice straight line cutting and rounded shapes.
Materials needed for your rocking paper chick:
- A paper plate
- Pens
- The scissors
- A little adhesive tape
- Optional: butterfly, flower, bee stickers if you like (we drew some!)
How to make a paper plate chick and egg that ROCKS!
Watch the how-to video or follow the steps below!
Making these hatching chicks is super easy.
Start by folding your paper plate in half (“pretty side out”). This gives you the centerline on which to base your hatching chick.
Draw an upside down U shape for the chicks head. It should go from the center line to the edge of the patterned part of the plate. That is, leave a gap of 2-3 cm at the top.

Now draw the egg – a few zigzags below the chick and next to the chick above the center line. And the round drill goes all the way following the inside of the plate and leaving the patterned edge. Can you see that the zig chick and egg zags on each side are “ABOVE” the center line. You don’t really want to cut below.

Color your chick, your egg and your grass. Add stickers if desired.

Cut out your paper plate at the top by drawing a straight line (this will be glued again) then cut out your shape. Try to keep the plate as “tact” as possible, as this will give the rocker shape more stability.

Glue the initial cut made at the top again.

Make a loop with a little more tape. Fold the plate down and attach it to the back.

Ended! Now look at your little ROCK egg. Isn’t that cute?
